Did you know that the Sun Sings? This is done as the heat currents twirl around causing sounds that are to deep for the human ear to register but which are there. As a musician I find this interesting. I have also been reading a new theory that it is sound waves that cause information to move along the nervous system, not electricity. Kind of like the sound vibrates the nerves. This makes a lot of sense to me, as it is often the sound of attack, not the visual sight that triggers us. Watch a movie with a scary monster and the sound off and no big deal. Turn the sound up and turn your back tot he screen and the sound will scare you. Same with music, it is the listening and feeling the sound pressure that makes it so awe inspiring, not the thinking about it or reading about it.
I have a theory that humans communicate with sound, masked as language. There are studies demonstrating that the world over, with all the languages, almost all mothers say hello to their babies in the same rising tone of voice - it is the tone of voice not the words that calm the child. In the military it is often the tone of voice that communicates what to do, not the actual words. Same in sports, music, love, hate. Language is one of human kinds greatest inventions, yet I think it masks and hides our true connection to life around us. It gives us a re presentation of life instead of life itself. So we feel something missing. We think it is the animals that can’t communicate because they don’t have language, though many studies show they can, with sound. Perhaps it is us that can’t communicate with them, not the other way.
Sound is the great mover, sound is the great communicator, and like us the entire universe (united one song) speaks in sound. From the endless suns to the endless nothingness of space, to the human voice and music to a cricket making sounds with it’s legs, we all have one thing in common, and that is sound.
Learn to listen to it, and to communicate with it. It is who we are.
